| dc.description.notes | This narrative collection of stories, family histories, conversations and group discussions is the result of state-wide consultations held by the Indigenous Family Violence Project Tasmania whose purpose was to ascertain the extent of family violence in the community and make recommendations based on community input. The Project Team spoke to more than 150 men and women in both formally and informally structured interviews, singly and in groups. The confidence and rights of contributors were protected, field notes were used in preference to tape-recording and, on completion, the work was shown to the contributors for final approval. Arising from the consultation process was a list of needs which participants felt prepared to work towards for the Aboriginal community of Tasmania. From this list four recommendations have been formulated: 1) that an Indigenous Family Violence (IFV) Working Party be formed to continue the process of healing of Indigenous family violence in Tasmania; 2) that participants in this project be offered training in community grief and healing work which they could then pass on to others in the community; 3) that the IFV Working Party assist the government in setting up a working group within the government to implement action plans agreed to by both parties with the participation of agencies such as the police and service providers; and 4) that the government fund agencies for the arts and performance to engage Aboriginal artists to reproduce these stories in a range of artistic and cultural formats. | en |
