Canadian report that analyses violence against women in the context of psychological and financial abuse, physical and sexual assaults, gang rape, trafficking in women, and sexual harassment in schools or the workplace. However, the focus here is on behaviour that could trigger a criminal justice response – acts of violence that qualify as offences under the Canadian Criminal Code.<br/ ><br/ >Utilising quantitative data primarily collected from police-reported data and victimisation survey data, the indicators developed and presented here, therefore, centre on physical and sexual spousal assaults, spousal homicide and sexual assault. There is an examination of why indicators have been developed, their challenges and limitations. The indicators have been organised according to six themes: severity and prevalence of violence against women; impact of violence against women; risk factors associated with violence against women; institutional and community-based responses; victims’ use of services; and public attitudes and perceptions.<br/ ><br/ >Highlights the major areas where improvements are needed in the future as: the lack of current data on sexual assault and sexual harassment; insufficient data on immigrant, refugee and indigenous women’s experiences of violence; insufficient data on women in all their diversity in the areas of ethnicity, age, geographical location, socioeconomic situation, sexuality and disability; lack of comprehensive national data on services to women victims of violence; lack of commensurate police-based charge data due to regional differences; lack of individual economic costs of violence against women (including costs of the loss of financial supports, legal services, mental and physical health etc.); and a lack of societal economic costs of violence against women (including costs of community-based services, and the criminal justice, health, welfare and social services systems).en
