dc.description.notes"June 2000"<br/ >This project involved both a comprehensive literature review and primary market research. Consultations were held with more than 280 people using focus groups, in-depth interviews and community meetings. Participants included persons from the general community, from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and Indigenous Australians. The report describes the attitudes of participant groups to defining domestic violence; when it is considered serious; its prevalence; the perceived causes; its acceptability; and its consequences. The research supported targeted communication strategies to address the specific needs of the diverse Australian community. However, in development of these strategies, care needs to be taken to ensure that no particular group is stigmatised as ‘having a problem’. The report also cautions that Indigenous Australians and people of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds do not constitute one homogeneous group and urges the need to acknowledge diversity within these communities.en
