dc.description.notes | Overview: In June 2005, New Zealand established a Taskforce to advise the family violence ministerial team on means of improving how family violence is addressed and how to eliminate family violence. The Taskforce devised a program of action regarding leadership, changing attitudes and behaviour, safety and accountability and effective support services. This paper is the first report from the Taskforce.<br/ ><br/ >Discussion: Following the executive summary, the report outlines the vision of the Taskforce: “that all families and whanau (Maori language word for extended family) have healthy, respectful, stable relationships, free from violence” and gives an overview of the planned action to achieve this vision. The program of action builds on the initiatives put in place under Te Rito: New Zealand Family Violence Prevention Strategy:. It utilises a life cycle approach to identify opportunities to break inter-generational cycles of violence and as a basis for the implementation of the program of work. The first program of action (for the next year) will:<br/ ><br/ >* identify policy, legal and other barriers to responses<br/ >* focus on the specific population groups such as those with disabilities, refugees and migrants.<br/ ><br/ >The paper then outlines the next program of action, which will focus on prevention as well as intervention, with a two pronged approach: learning from service providers and from those seeking help.<br/ ><br/ >The report outlines the ongoing role of the Taskforce, how it will ensure the relevance of its programs and how it will implement the program. The report includes discussion about the need to learn from what works. The report outlines the actions the Taskforce is taking to change attitudes and behaviour and describes the steps to improving the justice sector’s response to family violence. Finally the actions being taken to improve service capacity and the capability of government and non-government organisations are outlined. The report concludes with a summary of family violence prevention in New Zealand. | en |
