Notes:  General Overview: This report outlines the results of a two year family violence prevention project in the Samoan community in Queensland, Australia. Project materials are attached.

Discussion: The Queensland Transcultural Mental Health Centre was funded by Queensland Health to work with the Samoan community on family violence prevention. A Samoan community steering committee was formed and a forum held with local services to identify needs. An action plan was then developed. Its goals were to raise community awareness about domestic violence and Australian law, to increase services' awareness of Samoan culture and to create links between services and local community leaders.

Community education sessions were conducted in churches and schools and through the Samoan community radio programs. Leaflets in Samoan and English were distributed and a song was sung in Samoan, recorded and distributed. Project organisers found that working with church leaders was very effective and that the project achieved its goal of increasing community awareness.

Attached to the report are the materials used in the project, including the action plan, power point slides about Samoan culture and Samoan language leaflets.
