Notes:  This reports on the project of the Australian-Polish Community Services organisation, to capture a snapshot of the experiences of Polish women in Victoria. Methodology included quantitative and qualitative techniques such as statistical review, literature review, questionnaires for 2 groups of women, structured interviews with women of Polish background who experienced domestic violence but never approached domestic violence services survey to assess the nature, level and extent of domestic violence in Polish families and experienced by youth of Polish background.

Some key findings from the students’ responses included: 24.5% confirmed they have witnessed domestic violence in their homes; 39.2% of female students and 21.6% of male students indicated that they have been subjected to domestic violence; and 53.2% indicated they suffer from various symptoms of depression. Some of the main recommendations called for the need to: increase awareness and availability of services for CALD women that they can approach in the pre-crisis domestic violence stage and in the post-crisis recovery process; free culturally and linguistically appropriate services to provide relationship counselling for newly arrived migrant families; free psychological services accessible to CALD women who experience domestic violence; the need to raise awareness of newly arrived families and prospective spouses about the legal implications of domestic violence; and community education to the wider Polish community.
