This audit provides a resource detailing Australian research programmes on child protection and early intervention to prevent abuse and neglect. Specific aims were to identify research in these areas, to assess gaps, duplication and priorities in research on child protection in future Australian research and to place existing Australian research in the international context. The authors surmise that the fairly small response may be attributable to the reticence of professionals in the field to classify their work as "research". The research covered was largely qualitative (eg interviews and focus groups etc) and the objectives tended to be exploratory rather than theory-based and confirmatory (ie descriptive rather than testing out hypotheses or causal relationships). The broad aim was to provide a tool for answering questions about research and funding. The project highlighted the need for methodologically rigorous research, however, it concluded that merely funding further research is not sufficient. Research must be accessible and able to be translated into policy and practice changes. The results are also available in on-line format.en
