dc.description.notes | AIHW Cat. No. AUS 64.<br/ >This bulletin is based on the SAAP (Supported Accommodation Assistance Program) National Data Collection, and provides an overview of the 2003-04 data about female clients escaping domestic violence and the children accompanying them. Domestic violence is a major contributing factor to homelessness for women. It estimates that 33% (32,700) of the 100,200 clients accessing the SAAP were women escaping domestic violence; and 66% (34,700) of the 52,700 accompanying children in SAAP were children accompanying a female parent or guardian escaping domestic violence. The circumstances before and after receiving SAAP support are examined, such as housing type, living situation, income, employment and involvement in legal processes. Profile of female SAAP clients, referral source, length of support and accommodation, and support plans are also explored. It finds that almost one-quarter (24%) of female clients escaping domestic violence were Indigenous Australians, 57% were other Australian-born clients, 15% were born in non-English speaking countries and 4% were born in English-speaking countries. Thus Indigenous women are greatly over-represented. Indigenous women in capital cities were most likely to have periods of support longer than 6 months but Indigenous women in remote areas were most likely to have periods of support between 2 and 7 days. Women born in non-English speaking countries were far more likely to have no source of income compared to women in other cultural groups. Statistical tables and supplementary tables for each of the jurisdictions are included. | en |
