It discusses issues underpinning the provision of programmes for Indigenous men and outlines model structures and processes for the development of 2 pilot counselling or community-based ‘healing’ programmes for Indigenous men in Western Australia. It suggests that the Best Practice Model for the provision of Programs for Perpetrators of Domestic Violence requires restructuring to consider the belief and values of Indigenous communities with regard to family violence. It argues that it is vital that Indigenous communities are empowered to control the behaviour and attitudes of violent men by active community referrals. Based on a social learning approach, it assumes that violence in Indigenous communities is influenced by histories of communal and individual trauma; and that social structure and culture sustain and generate violence. It suggests there should be complementary groups and support services for Indigenous women, and preventive programmes for young Indigenous people who are at risk of early involvement in family violence (as victims or offenders or both), along with the problems of practices such as ‘jealousing’. | en |
