Summarises the key goals, roles and definitions adopted by the Darebin Family Violence Working Group, a family violence project initiated by the City Council, involving consultation with stakeholders and the development of a partnership approach to family violence. The processes of consultation and the key themes that emerged from it are discussed and the role of the Council in the provision of a range of related services for victims of family violence is outlined. A review of existing research and literature on family violence in Australia is conducted and compared to data obtained in the locality of Darebin. The most common theoretical approaches to explaining the causes of family violence are also explained, as are the relevant laws relating to family violence in Victoria. The report concludes by outlining Darebin City Council’s key policies with respect to family violence as well as relevant State and Commonwealth policies. A list of organisations involved in the Darebin Family Violence Working Group is also provided.en
