dc.description.notes | Provides a background to the nature, scope, causes and forms of violence against women, existing research in the field and the legal framework within which such violence is prosecuted in Victoria. Discusses the diversity of needs amongst women experiencing violence – for example, the needs of Indigenous women and women from non-English speaking backgrounds. The impact of violence against women on individuals and the community generally is examined and the government’s proposed Women’s Safety Strategy is presented, as are the key principles and goals guiding the development and implementation of the policy. The importance of providing women with a range of options and improving access to existing services is emphasised and the role of preventative and educational strategies in achieving long-term objectives is considered. The mechanisms in place for evaluating the strategy, and its relationship to other initiatives on a state, national and international level are also outlined. The appendix includes an explanation of the roles of various government agencies in the strategy. | en |
