Summarises the methodology and findings of a study aimed at assessing the health impact of intimate partner violence (IPV) on women and estimating the disease burden that results from it. Key health concerns for victims identified by the study included poor mental health, premature death, injury and poor reproductive health. The 'burden of disease' methodology and its capacity to measure IPV is explained and some of the limitations and implications of the study are highlighted. The paper concludes by emphasising the need for a public health approach to violence and its effects. A fact sheet of information contained in the summary, in annotated form, is also available.<br/ >This Australian report assesses the health impact of intimate partner violence (IPV) on women, finding that it is the leading contributor to death, disability and illness for Victorian women aged between 15 and 44 years of age.en
