The focus of the research was on male violence against women and children in domestic relationships and encompassed an extensive literature review, more than 200 professional consultations with affiliated agencies and interviews with 60 female victims of domestic violence. A significant proportion of the study concerned the collection of data on prevailing attitudes towards the relationship between alcohol misuse and violence, and service providers from a range of agencies, including police, the judiciary and women’s advocates, were interviewed. Perspectives on the effectiveness of current domestic violence intervention strategies were also sought. Long-term sequelae of domestic violence, the role of cultural factors and the significance of alcohol as a causal and/or exacerbating factor in violent relationships are examined and some of the implications of the study’s findings for research, policy and service provision are considered. | en |
