Presents the methodology and results of the Domestic Violence Client Needs Survey conducted in February – April 1996. Section 1 summarises the purposes, principal findings and recommendations of the report. Section 2 provides a background to the extent, nature and recognition of domestic violence in the community and outlines some of the current responses to the issue. A background to the survey and the context within which it was developed is also provided. Section 3 describes the demographics of the study participants and Section 4 summarises the feedback women gave in relation to various services in the community, including domestic violence services, counselling services, women's refuges, police, hospitals, courts and government departments. This is followed by a discussion of which services were most helpful to women, major service barriers, women's knowledge of services and women's use of protection orders. Section 5 outlines the major needs identified by the survey and Section 6 translates these into priorities for government departments and services in the future. The scope and methodology of the survey is presented in Section 7 as are some of the methodological issues which must be taken into account in analysing its results.en
