Reports the results of a survey of NSW women’s refuges carried out by the Immigrant Women’s Speakout Association to ascertain the number of women and children of non-English speaking background assisted by refuges who were experiencing some form of immigration issue, in particular being ineligible for income support. Reports on the number of NESB women and children without income support; their mode of arrival in Australia; average length of residence in Australia prior to accessing refuges; average length of stay; average waiting time for granting of Permanent Residence and for Centrelink Special benefits; and costs to refuges in providing support. Identifies a range of issue affecting these women and makes 11 recommendations to address the issues identified.
