dc.description.notes | For more information see "Mabourah Dubay Advisory Council" on our Good Practice database.<br/ >The Mabourah Dubay project ran from December 1997 to October 1998. The main objective was to increase access for Aboriginal women to the Northern Rivers Community Legal Centre. A second objective of the project was the establishment of an Advisory Council of Aboriginal women to assist the legal centre in culturally appropriate service delivery. This report includes the findings of the project and highlights differing concepts of law between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal communities, barriers to participation in the legal system, problems with service delivery and practical issues such as isolation, community structures and lack of income support. The primary method of assessing the needs of Aboriginal women was community consultation through discussion. A participatory approach was taken, with women encouraged to define existing limitations to access and to take an active role in planning appropriate responses. | en |
