The Executive Summary is available from the following URL: http://www.judcom.nsw.gov.au/monograph20/Executive%20summary.php
Apprehended Violence Orders (AVOs) now occupy a substantial proportion of the workload of Local Courts in NSW. In response to an increasing number of complaints to the Judicial Commission of NSW about the manner in which judicial officers dealt with AVOs, this survey was undertaken in July 1998. It aimed to canvass magistrates’ opinions and attitudes to AVOs in order to better understand the issues confronting them. It also aimed to ascertain the extent to which there is consistency of approach with AVOs, whether there was a need to develop educational or policy programmes in this area, and whether modifications were required to the system. 122 magistrates were invited anonymously to complete the survey a response rate of 56% was obtained. Reports the analysis of the survey results.en
