dc.description.notes | This study by Women's Legal Services NSW (WLS) explores the issue of the growing number of women defendants to Apprehended Violence Orders (AVOs) in NSW.<br/ ><br/ >For this study, WLS collected information from its 2010 court files where it had acted for women who were defendants to AVOs (93 clients appeared as defendants in 105 AVO matters).<br/ ><br/ >Amongst other findings, the study found that:<br/ > * In two-thirds of cases, women defendants to AVOs reported they had been the victim of violence in their relationship<br/ > * Women defendants were more likely to report multiple incidents of partner violence against them over a longer period of time, compared to complaints against women defendants which, in the majority of cases, involved a single incident over a short period.<br/ >The study also notes limitations associated with the sample size, and considers implications for policy makers. | en |
