dc.description.notes | General Overview: This is the final report by the United States National Institute of Justice of a study investigating the prevalence and correlates of domestic abuse against women with physical disabilities in Michigan, and service system capacity to respond.<br/ ><br/ >Results: Among the findings, the study found most of the women who had experienced the abuse had multiple abuse situations that were chronic and the abusers were typically male partners. In over half of the cases, drugs and alcohol were involved. Only a small proportion of women were successful in seeking help for their crisis situation. For the majority of women, however, the abuse was in the past and not current.<br/ ><br/ >Conclusions: After description of the findings, the report goes on to make recommendations about the requirements for training shelter staff and making improvements to the accessibility of shelters. The authors identify a need for better dissemination of information to women with disabilities about the resources available to them. | en |
