Notes:	General Overview: This briefing paper, prepared by the US National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, provides information to judicial officers regarding the impact of witnessing domestic and community violence on children and youth. Discussion: The briefing paper includes general information regarding the rates at which children and young people in America are exposed violence and the ways in which such exposure impacts on them and their families, as well as information regarding how judges might respond to children exposed to violence who are involved in the juvenile and family court systems. The briefing paper concludes with examples of several successful, community-based ‘Safe Start’ programs that offer multi-disciplinary support to children and adolescents exposed to domestic and community violence and a list of additional references. The brief is accompanied by “A Judicial Checklist for Children and Youth Exposed to Violence”, which provides guidance to judicial officers about questions to ask and actions to take when dealing with children and young people exposed to violence.
