Chapter 8: Elder abuse:may be accessed at: http://www.lawfoundation.net.au/access/elder/chapter8.pdf.
Based on a review of existing literature and consultation with older people, legal and non-legal service providers and other professionals, this report provides an overview of the unique legal needs of older people and the specific disadvantages they face in accessing and utilizing the legal system. A background to the study, its methodology and aims is presented and a framework for analysing the themes emerging from the research is proposed. The findings indicate older people not only experience difficulty in accessing legal services themselves but face a wide range of other legal issues related to housing, health, finances, estate planning, contact and custody rights, abuse and discrimination. The chapter on elder abuse includes a discussion of definitions of elder abuse and the range of innovative responses developed in NSW to address it, as well as highlighting some key issues for legal and other service providers.en
