dc.description.notes"For the past six years the Child Death Review Team has been responsible for undertaking detailed reviews of the deaths of children due to, or suspicious of abuse or neglect. This responsibility transferred to the Office of the NSW Ombudsman on 1 January 2003. This report presents the findings of the detailed reviews of the deaths of 75 children aged 0 to 17 years registered in the three year period 1 July 1999 to 30 June 2002 in New South Wales."--Convenor's foreword.<br/ >Presents the findings of a detailed review, conducted by the NSW Child Death Review Team, of child deaths as a result of, or suspected to be the result of, abuse or neglect. Chapters 1 and 2 define some of the key concepts used, provide an overview of the prevalence, incidence and types of fatal assault and neglect, and present the methodology of the study. Chapter 3 sets out the major findings of the review, highlighting factors such as circumstances of death and criminal/coronial proceedings that accompanied the death. Chapters 4 and 5 focus specifically on fatal assault and fatal neglect respectively, while Chapter 6 draws together the findings and attempts to assess their implications for future research, policy and practice. Emphasis is placed on the over-representation of Indigenous victims and the role of factors such as family violence, mental illness, criminal behaviour and other family stressors in the circumstances leading to fatal assault and neglect.en
