Part of a series of reports aimed at identifying the causes, nature and extent of breaches of law, including family violence, and alcohol and substance abuse in Cape York Indigenous communities, this volume deals, inter alia, with the issue of violence. Previous reports on violence in Indigenous communities and recent studies linking consumption of alcohol to the prevalence of violence are discussed. Although other forms of violence are acknowledged, the focus is primarily on family violence. Violence against women, child abuse and abuse of the aged are emphasised as key concerns and some of the strategies communities have developed to deal with these problems are outlined. Community-determined and -implemented early intervention and prevention programmes are suggested as an alternative to current approaches and ten urgent priority areas for action, followed by several further areas for action, are listed, including the declaration of safe areas, addressing the link between alcohol and violence and breaking the silence surrounding family violence in Indigenous communities.en
