The first sections describe the nature of different types of violence, their health consequences and some of the initiatives to address them. The types of violence included are family violence, rape and sexual assault, violence in situations of armed conflict and displacement, child sexual abuse, child commercial exploitation, female genital mutilation, and son preference. Then, the role of health workers and some assisting guidelines are discussed. The last sections examine the initiatives of the World Health Organization and some international documents, declarations and treaties.en
