An alarming new trend has recently emerged in the area of sexual assault – that of spiking a drink to facilitate an attack. During 2000-2001, NSW Regional Violence Prevention Specialists, a part of the NSW Strategy to Reduce Violence Against Women, have developed various projects whose focus is to promote the issue of ‘spiked drinks’ and move towards a preventative approach to the problem. The paper examines the prevalence of this type of sexual assault and looks in detail at two regional prevention projects, the Hunter ‘Spiked Drinks’ Campaign and the Manly ‘Don’t Get Spiked’ Awareness Campaign. Appendix one is the information pamphlet What You Should Know About Sexual Assault and Spiked Drinks. Appendix two is a poster designed for use in licensed premises. These were developed for the Hunter area. Appendix three is a survey of hotel patrons used in the Manly initiative to test the effectiveness of the awareness-raising campaign.
