Notes:  This paper presents the experiences of young women (supported by the Brisbane Domestic Violence Advocacy Service), to highlight the barriers that exist for young women involved in the judicial system (Family Court and Domestic Violence Court) when trying to gain protection from violence for themselves and their children. It looks at the lack of recognition by justice professionals regarding the complexities of young women’s relationships, and how it criminalises young female victims. It illustrates this with a case where police were not able to determine who was the offender/victim by making cross-application protection order and when the young woman breaches the order, she could have come in contact with the criminal justice process. It discusses how socially defined gender roles and perceptions of young women influence workers in the legal system, and how the system replicates the dynamics of domestic violence. An holistic approach, advocacy and outreach services are identified as ways to help work with young women.
