This paper was presented to the Home Truths Conference:, Melbourne, on behalf of Women With Disabilities Australia. It looks at issues for women with disabilities experiencing domestic violence and discusses how they have been excluded from most generic policies and responses, including their invisibility in both the disability and the women’s movements. It gives an overview on the status of women with disabilities, gender and disability, incidence of domestic violence, barriers to leaving violence, attitudes of the feminist movements, attitudes of the disability movements, attitude of the law, and attitudes of governments. It concludes that action is needed at a national level in terms of both policies and programmes targeting women with disabilities, along with the commencement of data collection about the incidence and nature of domestic violence experienced by women with disabilities. It argues for urgent change in the management of residences and women’s refuges for women with disabilities, including the training of staff in the care of women with disabilities, and of those working in the legal system and domestic violence support services.
