Explains key definitions and provisions of the Family Law Act 1975 (Cth) pertaining to family violence orders, clarifies the definition of family violence adopted by the Domestic Violence Advocacy Service and outlines some of the tactics adopted by perpetrators of family violence before reviewing recent research into prevalence of family violence in Australia, its consequences and the implications it has for child contact arrangements. The under-utilisation of provisions of the Family Law Act which allow for variation or cancellation of contact arrangements in family violence situations is then discussed and s68T is examined in detail, including specific provisions relating to interim orders.
