Notes:  Explores the psychiatric and legal approaches to child sexual abuse with particular reference to the Parental Alienation Syndrome. The occurrence of child sexual abuse was publicly recognised only a few decades ago, and even when research deems it under-reported, the psychology and psychiatry professions have argued that its prevalence is overstated. As a result, the Parental Alienation Syndrome was proposed to account for the incidence of sexual abuse allegations in custody disputes. Some researchers have suggested the reformulation to Parent Alienation, which generates a more objective consideration of children who refuse visitation. Similarly, the Victorian and Western Australian courts are implementing the Magellan and Columbus projects to comprehensively assess children and prevent traumatisation by the process. The author suggests some alternative resolution to obtain more information of the cases, challenge expert opinions and recognise trauma.
