Notes:  This paper draws on research findings about the relationship between domestic violence, mental illness and parenting capacity. Particular attention is drawn to the impact of both mental illness and domestic violence on children and on mothers’ parenting capacity, emphasising the importance of the mother’s personal coping to children’s emotional adjustment. Studies of the co-occurrence of mental illness and domestic violence are outlined, and interventions and dilemmas are discussed.
