Notes:  Describes the authors’ experiences in imparting training programmes to service providers who work with women and/or children surviving violence and abuse. Workers may be exposed to direct abuse from perpetrators and/or other service providers, and to vicarious or secondary trauma because of the stories they hear. If the impact on the wellbeing of individual workers derived from such exposure is not addressed, workers will not be able to meet the needs of their clients. The layers of violence/abuse experienced by workers and some measures to prevent and respond to vicarious trauma are discussed.
