Notes:  This paper explores the incidence of poverty among women as a consequence of financial abuse within domestic violence settings. Multiple forms of financial abuse ranging from harassment to sign loan agreements, to refusal to allow a partner to work leave, women exposed to criminal proceedings and force them to engage in criminal behaviour. The increasing criminalisation of women for conduct such as claiming sole parent benefits fails to recognise the complexities of domestic violence. Alternatives to the increased criminalisation of women through legal reforms and community education are presented.
