This article presents the ‘Parents Accepting Responsibility – Kids Are Safe’ (PARKAS) project, which is a partnership between Mental Health Services for Kids and Youth and Djerriwarrh Health Services in western Melbourne. Children (8-12 years of age) and mothers/carers who have experienced family violence are separately counselled and guided to address their emotional issues. The PARKAS programme aims at prevention and early intervention to tackle intergenerational violence and treat Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in children. A psychological safe space for children and a bridge of communication are created during the ten-week programme. Follow-ups and evaluations are also performed. A Dads’ and Kids’ group pilot programme was undertaken to improve relationships between children and their fathers.
