Notes:  This paper provides a number of suggestions for preventing and combating elder abuse. Non-spousal domestic violence legislation is proposed to address an area of abuse not currently covered in Queensland and to increase alternatives. Confidentiality and control are favoured over mandatory reporting. Greater support to victims, perpetrators, families at risk and, mainly, caregivers should be promoted to prevent abuse and enhance each person’s well-being. Education on the nature of elder abuse, ageism and the ageing process needs to be disseminated within the general public, professionals and older people. Appropriate housing options, including emergency care accommodation, must be available. Shelters for women who experience domestic violence are usually limited to partner abuse survivors and do not meet older women’s needs. Unpaid baby-sitting and sexual abuse are also mentioned as forms of abuse.
