Notes:  Reports on a study designed to assess police and community understanding of domestic violence issues in order to manage the needs of women from non-English speaking backgrounds. Police officers, community leaders and service providers were surveyed about the public/private perception of domestic violence, the causes of violence in intimate relationships and the distinctiveness of abuse in culturally diverse situations. Nearly all the respondents attributed responsibility to the perpetrator, and the majority of police officers considered domestic violence training insufficient. Some issues that require further investigation include repeat offending, traditional teachings, training, counselling and education on police roles.
