Notes:  Presented at the ‘Probation and Community Corrections: Making the Community Safer’ Conference, this paper discusses the recent development of problem-oriented and specialised courts, highlighting some of the differences and similarities between the two modes of adjudication. A brief overview of the different types of problem-oriented courts, such as drug courts and domestic violence courts, is provided and the core elements of the drug court regime, including judicial supervision, teamwork, treatment and service provision, and procedural justice are discussed. Some of the criticisms directed at the model are then addressed and recommendations for overcoming these problems are made.
