Notes:	This paper is included in "9th National Family Law Conference : Sydney, July 2000" conference handbook. Presents some of the major findings of a research project undertaken by the Abuse On Contact Group, aimed at gathering information on the way in which legal and welfare systems respond to women and children with a history of domestic violence after separation. The project was conducted within the context of a series of legislative and policy changes in the family law area and was based on six key assumptions, including a recognition of the links between domestic violence and child abuse, and the prevalence of continuing abuse after separation. The role of various agencies involved in the decision making processes, such as the Family Court, Legal Aid and the Queensland Police Service, is discussed and some of the difficulties encountered by participants in dealing with these agencies explored. The inadequacy of policies intended to screen out domestic violence cases from less formal processes of mediation and conferencing and the reduction in accountability of various agencies are identified as key concerns.
