This paper outlines the programme 'Respect, Protect, Connect' which was developed by Women's Health in the South East (WHISE) and South Eastern Centre Against Sexual Assault (SECASA) for secondary schools in the South East Region of Melbourne. Students in Years 7-10 attended single-sex workshops in which peer education principles were utilised to enable students to develop harm reduction and violence prevention strategies as a result of recognising how violence impacts on their lives. The practicalities of getting the programme into schools, the issues in running the workshops and challenges in engaging the participants are discussed. The success of the programme is illustrated in terms of target achievement, written evaluations and feedback from school staff. The various outcomes for the peer education team, the agencies and the schools involved are also presented.
