Partnerships Against Domestic Violence
Notes:  Paper presented at the National Forum, ‘Men and Relationships : Partnerships in Progress’ held in Sydney from the 20th – 21st of November, 2000. Describes the process through which South Australia has developed a specialist domestic and family violence court staffed by specially trained prosecutors, support workers, and magistrates. Specific changes brought about by this move are highlighted, including the introduction of mandatory bail with conditions for domestic violence offenders and a reduction in the number of charges being withdrawn by victims. It is argued that the creation of the Family Violence Court has provided both the ‘physical focus’ and ‘coordinated approach lacking in previous legal and policy initiatives.
