Discussion: In the paper presented to the Sentencing Principles, Perspectives and Possibilities:conference, King describes the initiatives of the Perth Magistrates Court in establishing problem solving programs throughout Western Australia, including Aboriginal courts, drug courts and domestic violence courts. He outlines the research behind the various initiatives and describes their operation and problems encountered. The role of magistrates in these courts is discussed and the paper examines directions that may be taken in the future in the light of the successes of the existing courts and problems encountered.
