Notes:  Presented at the 3rd National Homelessness conference 'Beyond the Divide' convened by the Australian Federation of Homelessness Organisations in April 2003, this paper discusses domestic violence as a cause of homelessness and examines some of the ways in which the Northern Domestic Violence Service in Adelaide has attempted to address this issue. Positive aspects of the service identified by the paper include improved accessibility and public awareness, the existence of a readily identifiable point of referral, a capacity to respond to requests for assistance from male victims and perpetrators and a willingness to challenge popular misconceptions about the role and legitimacy of shelter services. Key challenges presented by the approach, such as difficulties ensuring victim safety, higher costs and other tenancy issues, are also considered. Concludes that the model provides a comprehensive and holistic alternative to existing service responses to the link between domestic violence and homelessness.
