Notes: | Discusses the incidence of violence against women perpetrated by men in film – in particular, the availability of popular film representations of physically abused women in leading roles and the portrayal of abusive behaviour. The films studied have a combination of high box office success and one or more nominations or awards for the actress in the film. These films are Postcards From the Edge (1990), Death Becomes Her (1992), Thelma and Louise (1991), The Client (1993), The Silence of the Lambs (1991), The Piano (1993), and What’s Love Got To Do With It (1993). The film analysis is made from different arrangements of male and female ‘glare’ (or surveillance) perspectives. |
