This study challenges the concepts of resistance and survival in relation to rape attacks. Fourteen of the women raped by New Zealand serial rapist Malcolm Rewa narrate their stories and strategies to resist and survive the attack. Conventional notions of resistance as primarily physically are defied. Some of the women struggled by physical means; however, some victims also talked to the offender, tried to alert others, did the unexpected, and employed mental resistance. Although some women suffered physical injures, when talking about the effects of rape they concentrated on the mental or psychological harm. Self-defence concepts and tactics are criticised.
