Notes:  This article explores issues concerning same-sex violence amongst women. The first part examines the reasons behind treating same-sex violence separately, the differences and similarities to heterosexual violence, and the problems of determining the prevalence of lesbian intimate partner violence. Then, the stories of three lesbians living in a rural community who experienced violence in lesbian relationships (one non- intimate and two intimate) are presented. The narratives are pervaded with accounts of safety, loss of self, agency, disclosure and violence management.
