Notes:  This paper explores the complex meanings negotiated by young people to become sexual, and the inherent risks of turning into victims or perpetrators. Community work approaches to prevent violence in rural communities are also critically appraised. Interviews with young people studying in high schools in rural New South Wales reveal that co-existing and contradictory discourses of youth sexuality, traditional femininity, aggressive masculinity, responsible sexuality, rural life and rape shape their understanding. The research suggests that current sex education and violence prevention strategies are inadequate and inefficient in providing young people with skills to make informed decisions. More comprehensive methods need to be developed.
