Notes: | Presented at the North Queensland Domestic Violence Service’s ‘Fill the Gaps Forum’, this paper argues that the exposure of children to domestic/family violence, whether as victims or witnesses, is a form of child abuse and identifies some of the potential short- and long-term effects of such abuse on children’s behaviour and general well-being throughout the lifespan. Prevalence rates for domestic violence, children’s exposure to parental violence and dating violence against boys and girls are discussed, and the relationship between exposure to parental domestic violence and violence in later life is explored. Suggests that the assumption that intervention with the victims of direct violence is sufficient must be challenged. |
