Notes:  The emerging themes and initial findings of new research being conducted in NSW, on domestic violence and homelessness, are discussed in this paper. The research, conducted by the Australian Domestic and Family Violence Clearinghouse and funded by the NSW Department of Community Services, aims to identify the pathways that might enable women to remain safely in their own homes, on leaving a domestic violence situation. For many women, leaving domestic violence has often meant having to leave their own home as well, resulting in poverty and homelessness. In-depth interviews with women who have left a relationship where there was domestic violence form the basis of the research, and aim to capture what worked for these women (or could work for them, and others) in remaining in their own home. The paper explores the themes of women’s safety, blame and responsibility, victimhood and women’s agency, and the benefits for women in remaining in their own home.
