Notes:  Discusses three collaborative and creative projects co ordinated by the Goulburn North East Women’s Health Service (NEWomen) to improve the physical, emotional and spiritual health of disempowered, isolated rural people. The projects used different methods including theatre, sculpture, dance and storytelling to deal with particular problems typically experienced by projects associated with domestic violence, sexual identity and Aboriginal identity in rural areas. The projects showed that collaboration between health providers and groups such as community artists or theatre groups enabled people to express their feelings, make choices, improve their physical and mental health in a safe way. Difficulties relating to different professional cultures and geographic distance are indicated as obstacles to effective collaboration. The paper discusses the merits of addressing rural problems in a creative way.
