This paper was presented by Australian parliamentarians attending the Asian Forum of Parliamentarians on Population and Development held in June 2001 in Bangkok. An overview of current issues relating to violence against women in Australia with particular reference to Australian policy, practice and research is provided. The article points out the priority areas and projects developed within the framework of the ‘Partnerships Against Domestic Violence’ campaign. Initiatives intended to address the special needs of women with disabilities and Indigenous, migrant and non-English speaking women are discussed. Australia’s position on current international issues concerning violence against women is also described.
