Notes:	Transcript of an address given at the Adult Domestic Violence: The Alcohol Connection Conference in Saratoga, New York in 1995. Drawing upon her own practice experiences in the US, the author attempts to highlight the specific disadvantages faced by battered women who have become chemically dependent and/or battered women whose perpetrators are chemically dependent. Conceptualising domestic violence as a process of deliberate intimidation aimed at controlling and isolating the victim, the inadequacy of ‘sobriety first’ approaches that focus solely on the victim’s or perpetrator’s alcohol misuse are highlighted, and flexibility in response is advocated as a means for ensuring victim safety and recovery from addition and perpetrator accountability.
